It's not hard to find a sombre day in Whitby and I hope I've captured the damp and the dank in this painting of the Abbie Lee, virtually the last of it's kind from that famous commercial fishing port. "Something of Whitby, he loves it there" was my brief for a painting commissioned as a retirement present for a good friend of mine, from his teaching staff. Warm, cool and neutral greys pervade the scene, using cobalt blue, alizarin, light red and most of the earth colours to achieve the atmosphere, with hints of prussian on the landward sides. The rolling water is stronger darks laid wet in damp into weaker greys, finished with intense mixtures, wet on dry, in reflections of the boat's hull. I did a series of sketches of gulls in flight on the day, to pick out their rhythms and give them some authenticity when they were incorporated. Uncharacteristically (something to do with it being a commission) I've been quite specific about depicting the on-board paraphernalia of the trade).
