Wet Day: New York

Wet Day: New York

Another beautiful work, Brian.

So evocative Brian...feel as though I'm there in the midst of it all! Fantastic piece of work!

It's a super watercolour, Brian - it feels like a wet day - like the minimal painting of the buildings, the watery reflections and the great figures so expertly achieved.

Love the atmosphere Brian. I love rainy paintings, must be the reflections !!

This painting featured in an article I wrote for Leisure Painter on figures a little while ago. It was a demo piece with one of my classes. I used the subject to look at figures and reflections, as a vehicle to explore working wet and quickly, fusing rich washes into one another, spotting and laying an underpainting, implying rather than stating, and a whole bunch of other issues. I used a black and white photograph I found as a reference and kept a low key approach in the colour code. It was such a satisfying subject I decided to tweak it into a finished article and I remember it sold from my marquee at Sheffield's Art in the Gardens open air exhibition last September.
