I’m useless at giving advice and critique Brian, but I’m big on admiration! A well as the Magpies in the painting.......which are my favourite birds, especially two for joy......the palette reminds me of Monets painting ‘Magpie’. Although I think his shadows look to be more in the violet range, depending which version you look at.

Thanks very much for that, Fiona. I've looked at Monet's painting again and you're right he does use a blue violet for the shadows. There's actually very little white in his painting and the odd highlight works a treat. Definitely food for thought before I launch myself into plan ruination. LOL Brian

I really like the light and shadows you have created in this beautiful painting Brian, not sure about adding lightened yellow though (just my thoughts) great as it is :)

Hi Brian I think this has a beauty and charm as it is. If you want to see what it would look like with added colours why not take a leaf out of Monets book and paint another version and hopefully you will then have two beautiful paintings.

Lovely scene

I really love it as it is. It is beautiful. I think Bary's idea is best if you still have an itch. Do another one😊

Thank you very much indeed, Carole, Barry, Karen and Shirley, for the great replies. I was humming and harring over this one, wondering if a change was necessary, or not. Thanks to your suggestions I'm going to keep this painting as is AND attempt another version. Great suggestion, Barry, and one I honestly hadn't considered. I still have that itch, Shirley, but at least I now know where to scratch. *smile*. Much appreciated all round. Brian

It's such a beautiful painting Brian, I would leave this as it is but I do like Barry's suggestion of doing another version.

I like it as it is - it is a proper snow scene. If you want to play with colour I think it would be best to try another version - this is what I tell myself sometimes but then I end up ruining my picture! It's too good to ruin.

Thank you very much, Margaret and Maureen, for confirming that another version is the way forward. I must admit I struggle to leave things alone. I'm so pleased I asked the question, mainly because the doubts have a habit of niggling away. Much appreciated advice. Brian

There is a Bleakness, which we all equate with Deep winter. It's fairly flawless. A very successful piece.

Thanks you very much, Alicia, for the "great" reply. *smile* Thanks, Skylar, for the positive comments. I WAS trying to capture that deep winter feeling, so I'm more than pleased it came through. I'm currently working on a newfoundland winter scene, where winter has tightened its grip, and will probably get it finished today, now that the skies have decided to favour us with some sun. Thanks again to both Brian

Oil on Canvas painting of drifting snow and birds. I'd be interested to see what you think, if you'd be willing, about the amount of titanium white in this painting. I was thinking of introducing some lightened primary yellow, extending the shadows and adding more blue to the shadows in places. Any thoughts, no matter how negative, would be gratefully received.
