A canal once crossed Gloucestershire linking the Severn and Thames, but was abandoned a long time ago. Restoration of the waterway is taking place around Stroud where I live, but large sections lie derelict still. The canal passes through beautiful, deep valleys which once were lined with cloth mills of Cotswold stone. I love walking various lengths of the old towpath. It is richly atmospheric and never fails to inspire a new painting, like this one of an old lock, bridge and former mill near Chalford. Acrylic, on canvas board, 16" x 20".
