I love the various shadows and marks in this, Barry, and the dog walkers lead you into the painting...(no pun intended). It’s fabulous.

Nice one Barry, works well. I made some read pens recently, they give some great variations of line...

Fine work, Barry. It clearly demonstrates what you were talking to your group about...not sure I'd try your matchstick and bamboo...but, clearly it works very well for you.

Good painting and like the use of ink - love the yellow bush on the left.

Super effective...matchsticks...must have a go!!!

Thanks everyone, Ellen glad you liked the marks I did rush things as time was getting short so that the participants had plenty of time for their work. I have thought about the reed pens since seeing Jason Bowyers article in the Artist Alan, how do you find them. Probably wouldn’t suit your work Lewis but works well on landscapes as they give such a variation of marks. Thanks Maureen I used lemon yellow to create variation and suggest a bit of light catching the foliage.

Thank you Thalia, they are sharpened to give a pointed and flat edge which gives a good variety of marks.

Great teaching Barry. Beautiful depth in this piece.

Nice composition and love the soft colour mixes. Super painting.

Good composition and colours, Barry.

It is precisely the variation of marks which drew me in. Lovely.

Lovely painting, Barry, and I bet the lesson was well received. Those marks look wonderfully delicate and flowing. Brian

Thank you all, I was pleased that all of those in the group managed the exercise and enjoyed using the pen John. Still a limited palette though Willie. Thanks Cesare the composition was an important part of the exercise and hopefully the marks added the magic Gudrun.

Thank you Brian, it was well received and what pleased me most was the individuality that appeared in each painting, they didn’t just try and copy but used the information to create their own piece of work.

Cracking demo Barry, i’ve lost the knack of ink & wash but you’ve inspired me to find it again

Thank you Karen and Carole. Look forward to seeing your work Karen.

Lovely watercolour Barry, l like the splash of yellow and the light thrown onto the cottages, the colours are beautiful 😀

Thank you Linda, having looked at it for a while I have since darkened the wall a little to emphasise the light even more.

Very lovely, Barry.

Teaching a small group on the use of ink and wash, I selected this which gave plenty of opportunity to vary the marks. The pen was a sharpened matchstick pushed into a piece of bamboo. The subject also gave me the opportunity to talk about composition and the use of dark tones to reveal light.

I started painting in 2004, I am influenced by Wesson, Seago and many of the great masters, more recently I enjoy the work of Steve Hall, John Hoar and Alvaro Castignet to name but a few. I paint in a loose style and try to simplify as I can. The medium I enjoy most is watercolour but dabble with…
