Smashing effect Barry. Great perspective.

Thank you Jim, must admit I did call upon Art grid to assist with the perspective.

Terrific Barry! My kind of painting.

Thank you Fiona I am glad you like it.

It's a beauty!! Composition, light, and so well painted

Thank you Diana your comments are very much appreciated.

It is inspired, Barry.

Thank you very much Shirley.

What would we do without our mobiles. I know the area well, extremely well captured, Barry.

First thoughts were that this is a satisfying painting. Is that a proper critic expression??? Very good covers it too.

Thank you Jennifer if you can recognise it that is a bonus.

Thank you Gudrun, heaven only knows what is a proper critic expression but if it explains how you feel that's fine by me.

Nice work Barry , puts me in mind of Ted Wesson , as you know he was a matchstick man.

Thanks Alan, yes I admire the great man and am quite well acquainted with his work, although I am probably more influenced by John Hoar.

Beautifully painted, with lovely light, great perspective and wonderful sense of movement.

Thank you Seok, what lovely comments.

Wonderful painting so interesting to view Barry. Wouldn't like to tackle all that perspective.

Thank you Carole, I did cheat a bit by using art grid to ensure I got the perspective right.

Brilliant job Barry, love the near window effects too

Thanks Karen, that was the area that worried me most and I am relieved that others like my treatment of it.

A complex scene but you have not overworked it.

Thank you Stephen I cropped the original photo in order reduce some of the complexity especially in the area on the right which produced a second center of interest. In fact I have reduced the light in the area for that reason.

Yes an interesting piece Barry, the composition is a beauty and so is your painting, I love the darks and shadows which give it solidity, so important.

Lovely work Barry lots of interesting line and light and shade and interaction

Thank you Alan, you are absolutely correct in fact I have had to exaggerate the darks a tad to give me the contrasts I wanted.

Wonderful work Barry, such a great composition.

Thank you Margaret , l did think that you might like this one.

Lovely scene very well painted, Barry.

Thanks to Dennis and Cesare.

Oh yes, the John Hoar technique. I tried it too. Really nice scene and result as always Barry.

A few weeks ago I was in Frome and spotted this scene when walking back to the car, got out my trusty mobile phone and snap it was captured. As I haven't done any ink and wash painting recently I made a quick decision and reached for my matchstick and ink bottle. It's painted on Saunders Waterford half imperial rough, l did an initial pencil drawing and then used my sharpened matchstick to make those varied marks it produces and finally added my watercolour washes.

About the Artist
Barry Hulme

I started painting in 2004, I am influenced by Wesson, Seago and many of the great masters, more recently I enjoy the work of Steve Hall, John Hoar and Alvaro Castignet to name but a few. I paint in a loose style and try to simplify as I can. The medium I enjoy most is watercolour but dabble with…
