You haven't lost the atmosphere, Barry, it's a brilliant watercolour.

Thank you Seth, you are probably right and i expect I am judging it on the image I had in my mind at the onset.

I'm marvelling at the perspective in this Barry. Painting is certainly alsoo about problem solving!

Look good to me, Barry. Another terrific watercolour.

Nice painting Barry, this is you in your element , watercolour

Thank you Marjorie, the perspective did take a lot of sorting and I was exhausted by the time I finished.

Thank you Carole and Lewis.

Thank you Dennis, it does show the value of perseverance as a few years ago I couldn’t do a street scene to save my life. The perspective on this one would have totally flummoxed me and the end result would look nothing like it should.

I'm fine with the amount of detail Barry, it's a fine line between success and a flop I agree. I always overdo the detail in my oils, something I am working on rectifying. Great piece by the way.

It's a busy street and you have caught that rather well. Less detail would have risked losing that atmosphere.

I’ve only visited Bath twice but I loved it. This is a lovely watercolour depiction of this city. I don’t think you have lost any of the atmosphere and I like the detail.

Thank you Alan, Tony and Janet, I love how on this site small debates start which generates very constructive advice which is always welcome.

A complex scene well handled, looks as though traffic is a problem there.

Thank you Stephen, Bath is certainly not a city to drive in, not only is it busy but there are lots of no go areas that are not very well signposted that catch many an unwary motorist out.

All problems brilliantly solved I feel in this, No way has it lost the atmosphere, you should be proud of it not beating yourself up!

Very convincing street view Barry, skilful.

Thank you Thalia and John, it’s nice to have reassurance when one has doubts.

Lovely painting, Barry. Falling streets can be tricky but you've brought it all together here.

Thank you Willie, it did take a bit of working out.

Flippin eck Barry, I’d be absolutely chuffed with this. Bags of atmosphere and what detail there is, is fuzzy detail (I mean that in a good way) nothing is clean cut and sharp, so it gives the feeling of looseness. I must push myself and have a go at a street/city scene, I keep avoiding it. Mind you I avoid cities as well. It looks challenging and I don’t know if I’m up to it! Lol

Thank you Margaret and I can always rely on you Fiona to lift my spirits. I did use dry brush to give more of a loose impression. Give Street scenes a go I am sure you will do well.

I too often feel I overdo things, then I go back over it and wash that part off. Either improves it or it goes into the bin. I really like the buildings in this.

Thanks Ibolya, I am sure this is true of most artist but what I do find is that the better prepared I am the better the result I get. I find tonal sketches very useful

Recognised it immediately Barry. Makes me homesick.

Thank you Linda, when someone who knows it says they recognised it immediately it’s very encouraging.

On a day I knew I wasn’t going to venture out I had time to tackle a tricky scene that I have wanted to paint for a while. It’s another of my Bath street scenes looking down past London Street into Walcot Street towards the city. It’s painted on a sheet of Half imperial Milford watercolour paper. Due to the complexity in the view I feel I concentrated a bit too much on the detail and perhaps lost a little on the atmosphere, definitely not as loose as I wanted but hay ho a good few hours painting.

About the Artist
Barry Hulme

I started painting in 2004, I am influenced by Wesson, Seago and many of the great masters, more recently I enjoy the work of Steve Hall, John Hoar and Alvaro Castignet to name but a few. I paint in a loose style and try to simplify as I can. The medium I enjoy most is watercolour but dabble with…
