Beautiful work Barry.

Yes, it's a beauty, Barry. Noticed it immediately. I don't think you need to tone down the light on the boats, because one is already lighter than the other and they support each other very well. My eye was firstly drawn to the right boat and the action, before it wandered across the estuary to look at the smaller yacht. It was a toss up, really, but the right hand side won by a short head. As for balance, well, what can I say. In a real world this kind of cloud formation is not uncommon. It largely depends on how much you'd like the sky to dominate. Judging by "small cloud" I'd say you probably don't want it to distract too much. In my very humble opinion a small cloud WOULD improve the composition but the painting is interesting, in that department, without it. It's your call, as the saying goes. Great work. Brian

Beautiful. I love the colours and looks "plein air" to me rather than from photos - lovely and loose. And we definitely get lot of skies like that up here!

We are so critical of our own work aren’t we, but I guess that’s what helps us improve! I think this is a lovely piece and really like that little area of pink in your sky. I think you’ve probably answered your own question if you think a few tweaks would improve it in your mind. The more you think about it, the more you probably want to carry on! Either way it’s a lovely painting.

Lovely work Barry, I think the composition works very well as it is. Perhaps paint another version?

It's all fine Barry, great piece and I don't have any issues with the focal point.

Really like this Barry.

I really love this Barry.. the tones are great and I love the composition. I agree with you about a little cloud or a little bit of the darker grey/blue just underneath the pink maybe.. I’d be frightened to spoil it though... it is a beautiful painting.

Seagulls. Singing my same old song Barry, but the sea and boats are the natural environs of seagulls and it's still light enough for them not to have all gone to bed. Just a suggestion...

I love everything about this, Barry.

Great piece of painting, Barry. I agree with Alan, Stop beating yourself up! It's a fantastic watercolour.

Beautiful work and great atmosphere, Barry.

Many thanks for the helpful comments I have decided to leave well alone but may try another version as Stephen suggests. Promise I will include a few seagulls in any new effort Jim.

Cor.....love this! Fabulous atmosphere and mood.

I was looking at some of my photos from around the east coast and decided to base my painting around several. Therefore this is a completely made up scene with element from different coastal locations. Now that I am looking closely at the finished painting I feel that I have inadvertently created two focal points and should probably tone down the effect of the light catching one of the boats in order to focus more on the other. There is also a large patch of open sky and I am also wondering if a small cloud on the left might help the composition.

I started painting in 2004, I am influenced by Wesson, Seago and many of the great masters, more recently I enjoy the work of Steve Hall, John Hoar and Alvaro Castignet to name but a few. I paint in a loose style and try to simplify as I can. The medium I enjoy most is watercolour but dabble with…
