Yes I can see the wine bottles Sandra but the salmon eludes me as well. Lovely shapes and colours in this painting. How do you “do” an abstract ? Where to begin, how to formulate? Do you start with a concept? Or does it evolve as you paint ? I think I will pose this question on the forum and see what happens 🙂

I seem to be seeing a giraffe.

Very interesting Sandra! I think the salmon is facing the viewer I can see his face looking at me :) I like your vibrant colours. As for starting abstract I put colours down first, see if there is a idea for a subject if so I work on it then add marks and textures. Whether anything merges or not is hit and miss but I like to play with colours. The grape painting I did a few days ago started like that with colours merging and clingfilm added, although not abstract in the end the preliminary bit was abstract. That's my way anyway 🤔😊

I think i can see the salmon. The tail is on the upper right i think. The left ear of the giraffe.

Yes i can see the salmon now but they resemble more sardines.

Nice work Sandra , that's the fun the viewer plays a part in abstract and everyone sees them in there own unique way . I painted a lot of abstracts years ago , all the paintings on my walls are abstracts . I used to pour the paint on then get newspaper and press it on then pull it off turn it around and press again then with a smaller bottle squirt controlled fine lines , this makes it zing with a freshness then when absolutely dry pour p v a on and spread it quick before it loosens the paint , it then drys to a glass like finish and can be very beautiful .

Vibrant colours, just what we need at the moment to cheer us up. Now that Michael mentioned the tail, yes, I can see it! BUT why do we do this with an abstract? We have to try and make sense of it. I do know they are actually very hard to do.

That big Salmon is staring straight at me! Super abstract work Sandra but really, it doesn't have to look like anything in particular, it's just a good abstract with bold shapes and marvelous eye catching, strong colours.

Beautiful work Sandra great colours and vibrant organization a cracker

It has a rawness about it Sandra. The colours hold together very well. Your sense of colour ever grows.

Thank-you all very much indeed. I almost didn't put this one on, didn't really think it good enough. I am fascinated to read how Carole and Dennis approach abstracts as I seem to have lost the knack, so thank-you so much for giving me some ideas. Sylvia, I'm trying to remember how I did them. From memory I think some just evolved, others did have a plan - they were mainly ones with a grid-type pattern. I hope you do pose this question on the Forum as I'd be interested in how others approach this type of painting.

I actually hadn't tried to see anything specific, as it wasn't painted with anything specific in mind. Perhaps the person who made the comment hadn't had dinner!

Some lovely bright colours in this painting Sandra.

Thank-you very much Margaret.

I saved the image in to my photos Sandra and rotated it, it’s quite fascinating that it it holds images of many things when you look at it from every angle. It bright, bold and beautiful Sandra!

Thank-you very much Fiona. Your comment intrigued me enough to try the same thing (with the original), the one that worked best for me was one anti-clockwise rotation (the wine might tip out though!) The positive responses to this one have made me think about trying abstraction again. As it is too wet to garden at present (much-needed) I have time to paint instead.

Acrylic on 10x10 inch canvas. This is a rework of an abstract done a few years ago, experimenting with shapes, texture and colours. Someone in that group said it looked like 4 wine bottles and a plate of salmon. I can see the wine bottles but for the life of me can't see what has happened to the salmon!

About the Artist
Sandra Kennedy

I became hooked on painting when I joined an evening class on painting "Abstracts in Acrylic" some years ago. Now retired, I was painting fairly regularly until the last couple of years when I've had a "creative drought". This year I'm getting back into painting, concentrating on abstract.
