As I'm sure you know, there was a caricaturist in the 19th century who specialized in studies like this, though I don't think he'd have tackled that badge: my back is aching in sympathy. Was he called "Spy".....? He painted politicians, lawyers, reverend gentlemen, but he did not, like you, specialize in the military; there were a few, I think. Anyway, fine job.

Thank you, Dixie, Robert and Heather. Robert: yes, Spy (Leslie Ward) was very famous. The badge was only 4.74 cm tall so a bit mind-bogling to tackle but it's a very colourful one and adds something to the figure. I had him pointing slightly with his right hand as if he was in conversation with someone. Such a small thing can add to a story!

This was a commission with a generic face. Several professions or people's interests are suitable for doing this sort of painting. I rather enjoyed this but working on the badge, bent over a flat surface, has given me rather sore back! Suffering for my art.....!
