Magnificent piece Adele. The way you have captured the light on the stones is smashing.

This is impressive. you've captured it all and such character.

Brilliant,

Super texture in this Adele, really has that old time feel.

This is super Adele, love the muted colour, and it has a real feeling of depth and solidity to it.

Wonderful Adele, love it.

Really smashing painting Adele, that rings a bell from my visits there.

What a great subject Adele, you have captured the atmosphere so well, superb painting.

This is amazing I can feel the atmosphere of the place, you have an amazing talent.

Such a challenging piece Adele; limited palette, different perspectives, light and shade.....what a triumph!

Wow, what wonderful comments - thank you all very much. This, I think is my favourite piece as it has all the elements that I love in it - plenty of textures, plenty of character (my favourite word) and my favourite colour. Painted this a number of years ago and have been trying to upload it to this site since I joined but kept going on sideways - finally threatened it!!

Awesome three d effect Adele what a talent

Many thanks for your comments Sarah, Michael and Dermot.

Gorgeous lights and darks, Adele, love the strong shadows contrasting with the light.

I think it has all been said in the comments above, Adele. This is great picture; atmospheric with lots of hidden depths and a story to tell.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments. I found a black and white photo of the same place but updated to around 1911 in which the conditions looked slightly improved - but not much. There is a colour photo of the place taken about 15 years ago which bears no resemblance to this one, thank goodness. The downside of that is the lack of character!

Thank you Beatrice.

I love this . Where i live there is a place that is known for young people meeting each other on a first date called the glory hole it is the mirror image . Great work adele.

Thanks Russ. A bit scary that places like this still exist!!

Wonderful painting Adele, love the impressionistic feel to it :-)

Brilliant light!!

Thanks Tracey and Audrey.

Thank you Jackie.

Oil on paper - Sepia. Copied from a book of Victorian photos from Whitby Photographer - Frank Sutcliffe. Painted in my favourite sepia.
