What a lovely lunchtime view to sketch! No sketch today (so far) but thought I would show you the lighthouse painting so far. Had a nightmare with sand colour but feeling much happier with it now . Used the mahl stick ( why have I not used it before?!) much better!! Still lots to do but don’t need to rush

Gillian - always have a go: I'm not saying that's a GOOD drawing - but it does seize a moment: and I've seen many very academic drawings which are, by comparison, as dead as mutton. We all struggle with our skills - isn't that why we're here? - but we've got to have a go at it before we develop them, so press on: I like your drawing, it has life.

Love the lighthouse. I haven't done much the past few days, my dog had surgery to remove a cancerous mass and he is only 3. I've not been to bed for a week. It's not spread luckily and the poor thing has a large wound on his back. He's been more settled this evening so I tried a bit of sketching. Thought I would try the Queen. I know, it didn't go very well, looks nothing like her. I'm just glad I got a bit of sketching done. Hoping to get a bit of painting done tomorrow. Actually, looks more like me at the moment.

Believe me, I've seen worse - MUCH worse! There's a lovely pastel portrait of the Queen by Glenys Weston on the gallery - take a look and see if you can see ways of adjusting your drawing/painting.
Sorry to read about your poor dog - sorry about the massive bill which will be coming your way, too! With any luck, the cancer won't have spread - hope it hasn't.
PS - you HAVE caught something of the Queen, now I've taken a second and third look: it's odd how many people try to draw and paint her, and almost every painting or drawing I've ever seen of her looks off, in greater or smaller ways, to some extent. Probably the trouble is that we all think we know what she looks like, because she's been with us so long and has been photographed and painted so many times - and then we find we don't! She looks very worried in your portrait, as she has every right to be: the facial features are uneven and unbalanced, yes, but you've still caught a mood.
By the way - I've never tried to paint or draw her myself - I'm waiting for the invitation to Windsor Castle; I'd certainly never have a crack at painting her from a photo - there are just so many, and there's no single photo that's definitive; she has a very strong face, and one would need to break through that inner reserve to do it justice.
