This AI thing is becoming ever more dispiriting.  On looking through the gallery I came across a painting I found interesting…a little oddball…but sometimes I like oddball.  I commented on it favourably.  The image was said to be ‘oil on canvas’.  On scrolling further I found posts by the same artist also ‘oil on canvas’.  These immediately aroused my suspicion, so I didn’t comment.  I regretted commenting on the first posting.  Then I remembered you can delete comments…so that’s what I did. A couple of years ago I cancelled my Pinterest account because it was flooded with ai ‘art’. Do I want to be a member of an art website that allows AI?  NO! It will get harder and harder to detect.  I put one of my own pictures on a free ai detection app…it said it was ‘likely not ai.’  LIKELY!  So it’s not straightforward now.   If such posts on POL can be CLEARLY MARKED ‘AI’, then I might be able to live with that, because I’ll ignore it.  If that’s not possible, I suspect I’ll return to what I did for about 70 odd years…leave POL and draw for my own enjoyment.

As I'm one of the members causing you to despair Robert, I can only apologise for my naivety and lack of a critical eye. He has a portfolio of work on the site and I have commented on several pieces. If I've been duped by this artist then I'm very disappointed in him as a person. Are we to assume that all of his work is fake?
If AI is acceptable to Warners there would be little point in them selling magazines that promote painting etc and then letting machines take over the gallery. Like some members I have been fooled and taken in , it’s mostly the dishonesty that rankles me, if it’s enhanced be up front and say so , if it’s totally AI generated the don’t post it . I do differentiate between AI and digital art , as there is skill and an artistic ability required to produce a digital painting . Be very interesting to hear what the official view is and how it  be stopped, could it be flagged up for the moderators to view prior to its posting . That would be an absolute nightmare, lot of work would be prevented from being posted that are genuine paintings , be like the spammers attack all over again.
I’ve not heard back as yet! If I don’t hear back by tomorrow morning, I’ll speak with the editor of the magazine. In fairness, we haven’t been plagued with AI as yet, but once we openly accept it, we’ll probably be inundated with the rubbish. Digital is fine, no issues whatsoever as long as it’s stated as such… Dennis Roberts posts some great Seago style landscapes from time to time.
Thank you Alan.
I see one of the suspected ai pics is now on the home page.  Perhaps they don't think it's ai.
There’s two of his on the Home Page now! The person, or persons that select these doesn’t have the required knowledge that some of us have… that’s obvious by some of their selections. I rarely get a look in these days on the Home Page, don’t know why but I don’t let it concern me.
This is a most interesting thread, full of exciting revelations. I will go and see if I can find some AI in the gallery.
Russell -- the point of  AI is to deceive; and  it's not easy  to avoid being  deceived occasionally; when you come here, after all, you don't expect to be confronted by a lie - we tend to trust what we see.  It's when you take a really close look - smeared images, clearer focus far away than there is in the foreground - that you can spot AI.  But the days of it being easy to see from hands with six fingers, thumbs in impossible positions, uneven cheekbones etc, are probably beyond us; they've got cleverer.  If you see a picture and ask 'how on earth have they done that?' - sometimes it's worth a more searching look.   And even then - we can all still fall for it.
Indeed I found some. If you see paintings overloaded with details and look as if they took 18 months of more to paint then think again. You get a lot of it on Pinterest. Videos can look very very convincing. But I like to look for the clues that call out the fakes. Our problem is we only glance at images which is understandable with so much stuff on the internet. But a glance is not observation.👀 Happy A I folks
I just assumed that AI work would be of better 'quality,' more akin to photo realism. The way the figure was rendered looked painterly to me and not for a moment did I suspect it was n't done by a human hand. What on earth is the point of it all?
Well in my humble opinion it’s done by people who possibly can’t paint for a few reasons, 1, to dupe people into thinking that they are a talented artist, 2, to make money money be it from a sake of a piece or from prints etc. 3, the saddest of the reasons I think is that they like to acclaim and the fact that people admire them for their skills as an artist . This of course is only my view but there could be other motives behind their reasons for posting such work some possibly more sinister.
