I was curious enough to try and look him up. Not to be confused with a barrister called Mathieu Gregoire, or even an artist named Mathieu Gregoire (completely different style). I came across 9 of his (Gregoire Mathieu) paintings on a website called ArtMajeur, some of which are posted on POL, and was curious that every one of them was marked 'Not For Sale'. I am not sure what to read into that, but it is certainly no way to make a living.I noticed that Tony and it added to my suspicions! Very strange as all other artists work there is for sale. I also see that he has been posting here for some years. I guess no one has noticed until now, or maybe then AI wasn’t such a force?

Even more art mysteries, I read in the Guardian today that Turners self portrait seen on our £20 note was not, or probably not painted by Turner but by his contemporary John Opie. In fact Opie did make portraits of other artist as well. We know of no other selfies by Turner and he did not paint portraits or paint people apart from some unclothed examples, say no more.

Having worked for a national newspaper group for many decades, I wouldn’t put a great deal of credibility in this statement! And it can’t be proven!
It looks like a Turner to my weary but trained eye…and I’ve got his SP looking down on me in my studio, keeping me inspired and on the right track… sometimes anyway!
As the old saying goes ‘never let the truth get in the way of a good news story’
I’m sure you weren’t taking it as gospel John, I have faith in your judgment!

I agree with you Alan. It cannot be proven but he must have done some portraits in his barber shop days. The customers were attracted to the boys art in the shop. So there is another story. Also wonder how it is known Turner was 23 at the time the portrait was painted. Yes a Turner and J W Turner painted it.
Looking at Opie’s paintings they do not seem to fit into that kind of painterly application of oil paint seen in the Turner self portrait which is painted rather loosely.

Just to make those of us aware that have commented on the recent influx of what some of us consider to be AI, I’ve received this email earlier regarding bullying!
I’m sure Lucie won’t mind me sharing it, as it also seems to be directed at others as well as myself… so if I show it now it will save me contacting other members.
I’ve spoken with Robert and Paul, they’ve seen the email.
I’m as bewildered as anyone, personally speaking I’ve never bullied anyone in my entire life.
The only comments I’ve made on this (suspicious) artwork is ‘is this AI ? or this looks like AI, I hope I’m wrong!
What is wrong with that I ask.
I’ve only ever had the best interests of Warners on my mind, but from now on I’ll keep clear of making any comments on possible AI submissions.
My only concern was that I didn’t want this website to go the same way as a few others have, as being swamped with AI images and virtually ruined… however, I’ll shut up from now on and say nothing!
I’m assuming that Lucie is referring to the AI postings, because I can’t find anything else that I’ve commented on recently that might be unwelcome!
