Hi All, Following the huge success of this month's forum challenge, it's been suggested by Dixie that a thread for highlighting particular (maybe lesser-known?) artists might be of interest? I think this could provide an on-going means of inspiring others on the forum with more details our favourite artists and/or paintings. I will start the ball rolling with a favourite of mine - Fred Cuming. I'm sure many of you know his work already (he has written for The Artist in years gone-by) https://fredcuming.com/work This is a stunning oil painting of Camber - you have to have been there to experience the skyscapes, but Fred does pretty good job of conveying them too!

Thank your for setting this up Dawn , what a good choice to start off with . I have just had a quick look at his on line gallery, and was immediately impressed with his use of colours. Whist they look quite subdued the certainty stand out . I will have a better look and add one that i particularly like and will say why . Hopefully other will,do the same it would be good to get different views and thoughts on the same artist.
One of my favourite artists is an Orcadian artist Stanley Cursiter. I particularly love his Orkney seascapes and coastal views. I didn’t know of him before moving to Orkney in the late seventies.  https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/artists/stanley-cursiter http://www.artnet.com/artists/stanley-cursiter/

Your choice of artist looks really good and interesting work Gillian , can I suggest that we save him for next week then we can do him and you justice by looking at his work more closely. What would be really good is for you to add the painting that you really like and say why you have chosen that particular one, scene, colours , triggers a memory, technique etc .  I don’t want dismiss your choice or your contribution  but I fear we will not get the opportunity to look at the particular artist if we have to many to concentrate on at one time .
Looking at his work, I am drawn to the solitary figures in some of his paintings. Rainbow, Wittersham from Iden and Krazy Kat are my favourite. Krazy Kat seems in such contrast to his other paintings, it makes me wonder, why he chose do paint it in this manner and what's it all about. I know, I'm going to learn a lot from this thread.

Good idea Paul!
Like your choice Alan , there is everything there that you would expect in a harbour entrance but it not in your face . I aldo like the subtleties of the work a the quite subdued coloured . How long have you known his work Alan and did or has he influenced your own painting.  I notice the rainbow painting Denise and was instantly taken by it , it’s something I have never tried to paint but imagine it to be very difficult. I had not noticed your other choice but ten I did not look for long , it is very different and yes what was he thinking about to do something so different, again both painting are beautiful painted. I need to look a bit more there are a couple that have really caught my eye so need to look at them more and of course others.
I, too, love Fred Cuming and have downloaded many of his paintings to enjoy at leisure. What a good idea, Dawn!
Thank you Gillian for being so understanding, you turn next. Please any one reading the thread let us know who you want us to look at . I’m sure we can find a system to include everyone’s choice , it might take a while but we cam and will get there .  Don’t be afraid to leave a comment on any painting done by the current artist, you don’t need to be a art critic or have great knowledge, just say I like it because , it’s cheerful, like the colours, it’s so good etc . What would be really good if some of the newer members of the forum chipped in , it would be great to hear from you and I’m sure would would be great fo confidence building.
Marjorie is there any particular painting you like or are there several , it would be good to see them and find out what influenced the choice . The hope is that people will share there views and knowledge enable all of use to learn  from each other .
As has been said, there are so many artists we like , so hard to hone it down. I’ll start with a contemporary artist ( Fiona likes him too and has been lucky enough to buy one) - Ewan McClure. Wonderful portraits, Still Life and landscapes. I’ve been to an exhibition of his in Kirkcudbright, talked to him and what a lovely person. Watch how he does a self portrait on https://youtu.be/FbUT6zd6HpI Also, Amadeo Modigliani - love his paintings, the colours, the distinctive elongated style. Read about his tragic death and the day after, the suicide of his partner, Jeanne Hébuterne, who was 8 months pregnant with his second child. Contemporary of Picasso.
