Thanks  Marjorie I will look at how we keep a list so we can take it in turns I’m sure Dawn will help with that or show me how too.  . Is there any of Cuming’s painting that you particularly like, as it’s him we are concentrating on at present. I’m still looking at his paintings, I can’t decide which I particularly like as they are all so good.
I like all of his landscape/ beach paintings, but how about this Still Life?
That’s really a superb Still Life, I’ve just spent a good hour looking at his work and agree his landscape and beach paintings are excellent. I like these two out of all the ones I’ve seen so far. The beach one as I love boat and nautical paintings  , this is so good and it not highly detailed the less is more approach . The portrait I think speaks for its self , I believe I’m influenced because I admired Stephen Hawkin a lot .  He seems to have captured his pose and I expect any minute to hear the Hawkin metallic voice.  Thank you Dawn for suggesting Fred Cuming.

Continuing with Fred Cuming RA, these few words taken from his book sum up art for me… ‘What is an artist for? Surely not just to record what he sees, but to interpret what he sees’ I have Fred’s book A figure in a landscape, which I bought directly from him, and he very kindly signed it for me. I’ve got both of his DVDs also, where he works plein air and in his studio. Really inspiring to see his working practice - he captures light so well!

I read a vey short statement about him where it said he is obsessed with light and colours, having seen his paintings it’s obvious he is really good at capturing light. This is obvious in all the paintings I have looked at and ax you have already observed Alan.
I wasn’t familiar with Fred Cuming, but enjoyed looking through his work.  The two paintings which most appeal to me are June Garden and Kent Downs Under Snow, although I do also like some of his more atmospheric landscapes.  (Paul, if you’re keeping a list of artists to look at, I’d like to add John Blockley to it.)

There two lovely paintings you picked out Jenny , I particularly like the snow one the free branches are brilliant. Once again it’s the light that he captures that makes it stand out for me. The colours of the bark with the lichen on it is so much  like I have seen when working in the woodlands.  I will make a note of your choice and add it to list .  When looking at setting up the thread with Dawn , she mentioned being able to have it appear automatically , we thought weekly much like the challenge does .  Feedback would be good as to how long do we look at and artist etc as I don’t want to move on to quick , hoping to give people the chance to look and feel able to join in . As I have said we are not art critics , it an opportunity to say who and what you like , no prior knowledge is really needed .
Paul, if Dawn is able to set this up weekly, maybe you could select 2 or even 3 artists from the names you’re given for Dawn to incorporate into the title of the thread for that week so we know by looking at the header which artists are featured in any given week - it would also make it easier to search through previous weeks if you want to refer back to an artist who’s already been featured.  I don’t know what others think, but I feel a whole week for just one artist would be too long, especially as I’m sure there will be quite a list of names coming in.  Although you said Dawn could set up a weekly thread, you could just as easily create one each week yourself - and you would already have the names to add to the header if that suggestion is taken up.  Hope this makes sense?

Make total sense to me , I agree that a week would be a long time for one artist. Hopefully we will have a good list before too long to get us started on on the move.  It’s important to remember that you do t have to be any kind of expert or even know lots about the artist you suggest , I’m holding a couple of mine back for slack weeks but hopefully we won’t have many .
I also wasn’t particularly aware of Fred Cumming’s work but have just looked at his website and found this rather lovely painting. There’s a little video of him talking about his work which is very interesting, saying that he sometimes has four different versions of the same subject on the go at one time, to see what different results can be achieved. I think that’s a wonderful idea. I have often produced a painting and thought I could maybe do that differently, but then not bothered, so food for thought there. Oops that file wouldn’t load, so will try another. It was a painting of bathers at Lyme Regis. I also like Audrey’s tree, but I have tried to upload and coming up with invalid file type.

Look forwards to seeing which pzinting you picked out Tessa.  Having discussed with Dawn we are thinking of doing a new thread each week probably starting on the Monday with the names of two artists that have been suggested by you. Each week will be numbered enabling you to look back if you want too . I will keep a list of the names and who suggested them , please don’t be shy in letting me know who you want included. Whilst I have agreed to set up and do the admin bits , it’s yours to use and help develop.  My hope is that we all learn from each other and share our knowledge, I cannot stress enough how important and good it would be for the newer members of the forum to join in .
Thanks Dixie. These are the two that jumped out at me. I managed to upload by saving and then cropping very slightly! There are so many artists to chose from, I’m still thinking.
