Experimentation

Trying different things

Yes we all change as we progress through this facinating profession of watercolouring I am intrigued by different brushes and their effect on a painting. Which is why the so called style of my paintings change as well. I started initialy using the hake in various sizes. Then went to mops. Then to filberts and flats. All can give a different effect, which is wonderful. I am also intrigued by the different effect of the quantity of water you apply and when. I am continually experimenting and above all else learning. Recently I did a few paintings without pencil sketching the outlines on the paper first. This is a great experiment that all artists should try at some time. It teaches you to be more loose, and also think very hard before you put brush to paper. When painting like this it suits me to put in a few focal point darks first, which helps me define the tonal values overall. Dont be fenced in by your own preferential style, expand and experiment. It's. Dry educational. We are all never too old to learn different things. I am now going through a phase of trying to control and capture the light as a focal point. Mixing this with my loose impressionist style is a big challenge. Experiment and Enjoy painting. John
