Several buildings formed the communication outpost at Alice Springs in the centre of Australia. The Morse code wire covered the huge distance from the top of Australia to the bottom. The project, consisting of 36,000 poles and many tons of wire, was completed in 1872 and became one of the world's technical achievements of that century.
