The National Maritime Museum has a huge display of things nautical right in the "centre" of Sydney. In this painting the restored 1874 iron barque "James Craig", which is a common sight on Sydney Harbour and also undertakes longer offshore voyages, is seen moored at the stern of another historical vessel, the unmanned lightship "Carpentaria". It spent much of its working life moored in various locations in the Top End of Australia. What appealed to me (apart from the difference that the two vessels showed) was the contrast in colours, also the different verticals of their superstructure. I painted this centre-jour on Arches 300gsm rough using Daniel Smith paints which I have been trying out.
