The aim of the painting

My aim is to produce a painting that captures the light and mood of a scene, using a combination of loose watercolour washes with controlled passages to bring the scene to life.

Try not to get bogged down with too much detail.

Aim to convey the atmosphere of the scene rather than just producing a faithful copy of it. If that’s what you want, a camera will do it so much better – and more quickly!

Preparation

Before I start painting I make a small pencil study of the picture which helps me focus on the structure of the painting, the lights and darks and the overall composition.

These sketches need only be small and quick, taking 10 to 15 minutes.
