A sad day - this represented the death of whole communities, however much of a liberation it might have represented for those spared from going down the pit; as my grandfather did - and it killed him.

Thank you for all your comments. A bit of serendipity about this. I started with two ideas- painting figures and a restricted palette based on neutral tint. The background is a mixture of shapes from several photographs chosen as being easy to draw with a weak hand and turned out giving the colliery a dilapidated look. When I look at it now I understand your feelings Robert

Brilliant representation Alan. Having worked on the coal face from 1975 to 1991, I know how every one of them felt. Brings a tear to my eye.🥲
