Stunning work, the tones and shapes are superbly done.

A lovely bright watercolour Alan. I hesitate to offer advice (mainly because I know very little about it) but I think your thoughts ref, reflections may be something to consider, or, maybe making the green boat a tone or two darker to balance up the dark trees on the right.

Many thanks for your comments. Good point Fiona. The tonal balance does need altered. My hunch would be to knock back the trees rather than strengthen the boat which I feel is dark enough.

Yes, that would work too, but you could still go a little darker with the reflections....or darken the righthand foreground a tone and leave the reflections as they are.

I've visited that very spot, Alan! I took some photos but never did a painting of it. Perhaps I might now that I have seen your interpretation. The boat makes a nice statement against the white of the buildings and the green of the hull is balanced by the bank of trees on the right. Great work.

Thanks Thea. Interesting comments on the tonal balance of the boats viz the trees. Looking forward to seeing your interpretation. Did one on-site on half imperial Bockingfiord but from the other side of the Mill and not for public viewing!

This was painted on 16" x 12" Arches Rough as I had no time to do an onsite sketch. Tried what I call my jigsaw method as I find these complicated scenes easier if I paint the darks first (green boat, right hand trees etc, ) then add the mid-toines and final calligraphy. As the green boat was there to draw your eye the Mill was subdued a in tone esp. the windows. The sky and water were added last and I am not sure I have got the water reflections dark enough. Was thinking of John Hoar at the time who paints his water reflections simply with a greeny blue ignoring the colours of reflected boats (see his of Blakeney Hotel). Still a bit tighter than I wanted but out of my comfort zone of big loose washes. As usual helpful crits appreciated. It is not a good painting.
