After The Storm
John Constable is one of my favourite landscape painters followed closely by J.M.W. Turner. Constable loved clouds and dramatic lighting. He was especially interested in meteorology and used this new science in his many cloud studies. This painting of the harbour light at Port Stanley, Ontario, on Lake Erie emulates one of Constable’s skies following a storm with the vestiges of rain still seen in the lower left. Constable frequently liked to have sunlight breaking through clouds to illuminate part of a scene.
