The Alms Door

The Alms Door

Unfortunately, it is a sign of our time now, isn't it? A great statement painting Wib.

In medieval times most monasteries and priories had an alms door. Here, usually at a particular time, a brother would give to the gathered poor a small loaf of bread to feed both them and their families – a kind of early food bank. My idea for this digital oil was to show one of the 99% who desperately need some assistance. She is waiting for a small kitchen cupboard service to open in a crumbling building so that she might have enough to survive the day.

Very poignant Wib.

How very many of us take our survival for the day for granted! Quite a timely reminder of those amongst us who cannot.
