Nicholson Fake?

Interesting but makes you wonder how many fakes are about!

Wow Jim this is fantastic. Love the shadow of the jug on the wall and the pile of plates etc., splendid job.

I missed that one Jim, a great programme though and an eye-opener! Super drawing by the way.

Nice one. I agree with your comments and it is more annoying when it relies on the judgement of just one person. Anyway, this must be a fake, it doesn't have the 'thumb print of light blue' under the signature :)

Excellent Jim!

Thanks all for the comments. I do really feel for the lady owner who paid such a vast sum only to be told it was a fake.

Now, Jim, that is a superb watercolour copy! Sometimes the outcome of the programme is very frustrating....how all the evidence is there and yet the ‘expert’ refuses to acknowledge it!

Thanks Chandra; yes, the art world is as independent as ever still searching for the meaning of "expert". Funny how such experts rarely do much painting.

I hope you can sell it for £100000 like the one on ‘Fake or Fortune’

True Jim, who says the the experts are experts, certainly not the evidence. I guess once they have made such a statement in omitting it from the 'their catalogue' it would be too embarrassing to admit they were wrong.

Didn't see the programme, but read Katherine Tyrell's blog on the subject; short of a notice in his own handwriting saying "I, William Nicholson, painted this", stuck to the back of it, I don't really see how the proofs could be any more compelling. Anyway, I'll just have to settle for yours, because I'd know your signature anywhere. It does make you wonder about the prices paid for paintings by deceased artists: poor old Nicholson would have seen nothing like £165,000 for one painting - he painted many jugs and still lifes, but if this one wasn't his work it's still a charming painting.... I'd have to be extraordinarily charmed, however, to think of parting with £165,000 - how about sliding some of that cash in the direction of a living artist, instead of buying art as an investment?

I watched Fake or Fortune on T.V last night where an "expert " decided that a painting bought for £165,000 was a fake, despite utterly compelling evidence to the contrary. I was so impressed with the painting I just had to try a version in watercolour (Nicholson painted it in oils) You can see the original on Google Images under the artist's name.
