Racing For The Line (New Challenge - One Liner but drawn upside down)

Well I'm speechless! An upside down one liner, whatever next ??? You're right though about seeing and drawing shapes rather than drawing what you think you know to be there! Well done indeed!

Thanks, Debs. It is a bit strange but I am really trying to inject some dynamism into my drawing and doing these exercises is helping a lot. I am gradually moving away from my very precise method of drawing towards something which I hope will end up a bit more free and expressive.

I can only think that it's enthusiasm and no stressing which is resulting in such super lively images. The very idea of drawing upside down (no, not you..LOL) from an upside down photo, hardly looking at the drawing and in a continuous line sounds so impossible and yet look, it works!!

Oh no, you've moved the goal posts Thea, you'll be asking us to stand on our heads next! If you'd looked at the paper throughout this is an excellent drawing but to think you did it in the way you describe, it's awesome!

Braver than I am, one liner right way up would be pushing me! - great drawing

Thank you Louise, Christine and Glennis - you never know what you are going to turn out when you do one of these drawing so it is always nice when it does have some resemblance to what you were actually looking at! Actually, it struck me that the body of the horse looked elongated and Stubbs, the famous horse painter, used to change the dynamics of a horse's body when he drew and painted them. Perhaps he did his using a one liner method, no peeping, too, lol!

Gosh, you're getting really expert at these Thea! Actually, drawing upside down isn't as hard as it sounds - I was encouraged to do this by my tutor back in the mid 1990's and is good practice, but to do it without looking is something else!

I'm away for the day and what do I find here when I come back?? People drawing upside down, inside out and what next!!?? Blindfolded... Hmm, that's an idea. No,seriously Thea this is fantastic and I can't wait to have a go tomorrow!!!

Thank you Frank and Satu - very nice of you to leave such nice feedback. Frank - it is funny but I really think my brain is learning to look at shapes and to stop trying to control my hand so much. I have wanted to draw more dynamically for ages but have never come across a way to achieve this until now. When I get back to more normal work, I am sure this is all going to have a positive effect on it. Satu, best not go away for the day - you never know what I will come up with next!! Good fun though, isn't it?

Honestly Thea I am 'gob-smacked' how great is that!

How on earth do you do it upside down and one line and it still looks well drawn well done again Thea .

Thank you very much Dennis and Carole - it is a weird thing, isn't it - drawing upside down etc but it does seem to make your eye, hand and brain do something very different to what is normally does. Dennis, when the subject is tricky I draw slowly and also I sometimes put my left finger on the line I am trying to reproduce and then make my hands work in synch with each other which helps to control distance and speed of drawing. It is actually easier to draw upside down because you just look at pure shapes and then you can relate one line to another without bothering what exactly the object is. It is all smoke and mirrors!

Keep going, like the horse! I agree with you about he shapes etc.

This is another one-liner, drawn with just a couple of glances down at my paper, but this time I turned the photo upside down and did the drawing upside down as well. Horses are complicated subjects and it can be easier to draw this sort of subject if the brain just sees shapes rather than seeing what it knows to be a horse. Normally you would look at what you were drawing when trying this method and would not necessarily do it as one continuous line, but I just thought I would push the boundaries and see if I could do it as a one-liner with very minimal peeping as well.
