Stunning portrait Thea, you really caught his thoughts, beautiful colours as usual

As Petra says you have caught his thoughts and made it look so simple! Great portrait and great painting!

Thank you, Petra and Debs for your kind comments. Hopefully, on this one the image looks ok because I have gone back to me old system of copying my paintings - couldn't get the laptop way to work. I have been worried that my portraits seem to have been getting tighter and tighter, which not where I want to be, so I let rip a bit more. I also did this completely alla prima - put the paint on and resolutely didn't touch it again. I do this most of the time normally, but I took it to another level on this one. Sat on my hands for ages!!

This was certainly an emotional moment and it is painted perfectly. My husband is a member of a cycling club and I recognise this expression when he has done a half-day-trip of about 120km (by the way, his is 73 years old and a member since 1985). You caught this amazingly well, Thea!

Lovely colours, Thea - this has a touch of Charles Reid ( the American watercolourist ). He has a lovely free style with use of colours - and you have also achieved that here. (Also thanks for your nice comment on Silver Birch)

Thank you Mia and Pat for your very kind comments. Mia, I think these cyclists are another breed - can't imagine anything harder than cycling all that way or up mountains. Pat, more than a touch of Charles Reid I think! I confess he his an artist who's work I have loved for a while. I would die happy if I could produce one painting as good as any of his.

Fabulous paintng Thea, I really admire artists that can capture a likeness. I love your loose washes.

Very well done. Love your style Thea.

Well done Thea and I love the idea of you sitting on your hands waiting for the paint to dry!

Thank you so much Fiona, Larry, Carole and Louise for your encouraging comments. Yes, Louise - hand sitting is sooooo hard - I just want to fiddle. I usually go and eat chocolate to distract myself LOL!

Great portrait and you've captured the emotion of the moment so well, Thea.

This is really, really lovely, Thea! Such beautiful colors and a really good pose! Love it!

Thea,Youv'e done it again and what a lovely job you have done too. It's such a good portrait.

Thank you Jane, Kim, Seok and Joy for your heartening comments. This is rather a new style for me in painting portraits and I really had no idea what I was doing or how it would turn out. It is lovely to hear your comments and I shall now try this style again with the next one I do.

I like the way the colours in the shadow of the chin are echoed in the background and hat, lovely work.

Something a bit different and experimental - tried a different way of tackling a portrait. This portrait is of my son-in-law, Jon, who challenged himself to cycle up Mt Ventoux while we were on holiday in Provence this year. It is one of the killer mountain climb stages of the Tour de France (all 1912 metres high of it!) and he wasn't sure he could do it. Well - he did it in an amazing time of 1hr 40 mins, which is a great achievement. We met him at the top with croissants, coffee and lots of congratulations. Later that day, while sitting in a cafe, I caught him staring into the distance and I knew exactly what he was thinking and that he was re-living that wonderful moment when he achieved his dream. Watercolour on Langton 140lbs.

About the Artist
Thea Cable

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
