Lovely work Suze, great capturing of the sunlight falling on face and hair, for an early attempt at pastels you have done really really well with this work, I agree that pastel pencils are really good for portraits and any really fine details, if you look around the site pages a bit you will find other people's takes on pastel or coloured pencil portraits, techniques for both are very similar

I have only just started to use pastels with the encouragement of my brother who is a pastel artist. This started off as a "10 minute sketch" but ended up taking about half an hour I think the pastel quite suits the bright sunlight on Jessica's hair and face. I do find them rather messy though & I have now invested in some lovely pastel pencils which are great for sketching but don't have the same looseness as these pastels. I'd appreciate any tips and comments. Suze x
