I think it works nicely. It's the eyes you want to be looking at! Lovely.

This is very cute. I like it very much :)

If you look at the forum today, you'll see a slight argument on this subject, ie are dogs and sentimental depictions of same (which I'm not saying this is) really acceptable subjects for paintings.... And so on. An argument that does tend to crop up every now and then on sites such as this: but I think you've got the complete answer to that here - you've painted your daughter in law's dog, painted it for her birthday, and I bet she'll love it. And what better reason for a painting could there be? Your second attempt too - well: of course one could criticize it in various ways if one wanted to, but what the Hell? You've painted it with love, it's your second animal painting - and it works. And that's all anyone could reasonably ask. Well done, and I hope the present is accepted in the sense in which you so obviously intended it. You should be, and I hope you are, proud of it.

A lovely portrait and a valued gift.

This is my daughter in laws lovely Red Cocker spaniel Dylan.....I painted it for her birthday this coming monday. It's only my second attempt at animal painting. I think it turned out ok and I do hope she likes it. I went for a similar colour background to keep the tonal values and so as not to distract from him.
