Interesting portrait and you are right that you injected some variation in shade and colour in the darks in the painting which works so well. This is so necessary as solid, dull darks absolutely kill a painting for me. You have got the effect on sunlight on Bonnie's face and shoulder perfectly.

Just wanted to say that, sadly Bonnie died less that a year after this lovely boat trip. On this day she had
suspected she was ill but hadn't had comfirmation.
I painted this for her as a "new flat warming present" and she loved it. She's sorely missed! such a vibrant, fun person. Suze
I initially put down a mix of yellow ochre with a dash of terra rose as I knew that the painting was going to be quite dark in parts but I didn't want it to feel cold or dreary as it was in fact a beautiful hot sunny day in July this year. We were on a riverboat for a anniversary party and about to go under a bridge in a dark part of the river, I thought the lovely shape Bonnie was making leaning on the rail and the low sun hitting her face looked great so I took a quick series of shots and created this from a combination of them all.
