Such stunning pictures in your gallery. How large is this and how long did it take to complete? What advantages are there to using coloured pencils rather than oils or acrylics? Sorry for the questions, just new to all this.

Thanks for your kind comments Stephen. I started this picture months ago and worked on it in between commissions (a bit of light relief) but the paper doesn't have much tooth and didn't take many layers. I struggled to get the colours bright enough on black and I gave up with it. The picture was destined for the bin, but I dug it out again a couple of weeks ago, sprayed it liberally with fixative and was able to brighten the whites enough to make me a little happier with it. I've submitted it as one of 4 entries to the UK Coloured Pencil Society Annual Exhibition - deadline was last weekend so just waiting to see if the Jury accept it. So Tigger may have a 'stay of execution'. To answer your questions - probably I spent around 20 hours on it - it was intended to be a bigger piece but as part of the 'second chance' I cropped it down and its more or less square and about 16" x 17" I've never used oils or acrylics - I'm strictly a pencil artist so can't comment. Compared to using pastel pencils though I find coloured pencils slower but I can get finer detail and obviously they aren't as messy/dusty to use as pastels.

Thank you so much for answering my questions. I do hope your drawing is accepted. Best wishes.

I photographed this tiger at the Wildlife Heritage Trust sanctuary in Kent and he obligingly posed in this position for several minutes - obviously daydreaming of freedom, or dinner perhaps!! He has the most magnificent mane of hair - not sure if this is normal for him or was his 'winter coat' This is drawn in coloured pencils on Canford black paper
