Great experiment and the results speak for themselves Sharon, I bet you'll try this approach again. It is so much more interesting and caught my attention straight away.

I like the colours in this Sharon, you have conquered the challenge with your lovely tones.

Thanks Alan, Carole and Dennis for your generous comments. I love to experiment with watercolour, and although the results usually leave a lot to be desired, they are all part of the journey towards a freer, more expressive way of working which is my goal.

We've tried a similar experiment on POL, using red and green. Other combinations were available, as some proved.

I think that this teaches you a good lesson about tone; at the same time, one probably yearns to combine those tonal lessons with full colour at some point - which I suppose is the point.

Your example is very delicately done, but then having seen your other watercolours I should have expected no less!

Beautiful. As you say it's the values that do the job !

Thanks for your kind comments Glennis, Robert and Avril. Agreed Robert, full colour is beckoning but I also really love the subtle mingled greys you can achieve with watercolour, veering in all directions. They have something magical ; - not familiar with other techniques, but maybe the same applies ? Anyway, still lots to discover !

To return to your comment Sharon, watercolour has a beauty like no other medium, it allows endless possibilities to be creative, and you don't always have to have a degree in fine art to achieve this. I've taught youngsters as young as five to be expressive and creative and the results can be amazing. Good stuff, keep it going.

Superb use of watercolour Sharon- you've got transparency of washes along with clever tones and those colours are striking

Striking, lovely painting!

I totally agree with all that's been said Sharon......beautiful watercolour.

Gorgeous! Red and green are so tricky to use together. Spot on composition and feeling for light.

Love the contrast between the light and darker areas and all the nuances of colour in between!

This started as a challenge in my local painting group : attempt to produce an effective landscape using complementaries instead of local colour. I think it helped me to realize that values are more important than the actual colours used.
