Love the glimpse through the archway Robert, the dense black frames the inners of the castle really well

Well that’s quite a surprise Robert, not your usual thing. But we all do other stuff we don’t post. It’s quite majestic! I like the view through the arch.

Thank'ee kindly both, and to the one who 'liked' it.... actually, I do a lot of this sort of thing, but don't usually post drawings; or haven't done in the past. I don't know why I don't - I always like to see others' drawings, sometimes more than full-colour paintings. So - and I don't mean to threaten! - I shall post more in future.

I'm usually not making the same subject twice, as I'm becoming inpatient early, so to get ne interested and motivated I'm never looking back. I admire though some artists do, as in your example Robert. The painting or drawing is nothing but very personal moment spent against the drawing board... Studying the object now and then, helps to understand it better, etc. It is nice perspective of view Robert, and nicely done.

The ominous atmosphere of your drawing, matches my mood, when visiting said castle. Whilst on holiday on IOWa few years back, hubby ‘s back stared playing up again. I had to buy him a new tens machine as he forgot to pack it, and when we got to the castle, he decided that he could not attempt the stairs, so had a coffee and left me to tour the edifice on my own. So I swiftly made my tour and returned to the cafe, not liking to leave him on his own in pain. So I remember very little apart from my anxiety. Very moody drawing…

I’ve almost certainly got numerous sketches and pen & ink drawings of this very subject, stored away in long since opened dusty portfolios, all done plein air I believe in the 60’s and 70’s…and of many more historical places on the Island. I’ll have to dig them out one day… maybe! Anyway, a good strong drawing on what appears to be a blue toned paper.

It looks like you know it very well. Excellent rendering.

A good strong drawing Robert, I like the confident diagonal strokes. I get Linda's point about castles being ominous, though not for the same reason of course. Castles have a forbidding sensation for me, they are for keeping people out. So dark and vaguely threatening is right for castles, they are like clenched fists in the landscape. (Sorry about that).

This does have a moody brooding feel to it Robert, and I like how you’ve achieved that. Linda’s memory, and this, remind me of a visit to Warwick castle a few months ago, where we chose to go on a strictly one way climb up a tower and around the battlements. There was a rather small warning at the entrance not to go if you didn’t like heights, had BP problems, claustrophobia etc, should have listened! 🫨 scary, but I sort of enjoyed it once up there. Castles are such great buildings.

A sturdy drawing of a sturdy gatehouse. Nice atmosphere

A very foreboding scene but leading the viewer’s eye into the unknown is a lovely touch. Super sketch Robert.

This is a great drawing Robert. You’ve captured the ancient majesty of the castle and enhanced the sections of light and dark.

Excellent drawing Robert. I like everything about it.

I like the moody feel.

I've drawn the Carisbrooke Castle gatehouse any number of times, and painted it once (though where that went, I don't know). I just felt like having another crack at it yesterday, in ink and crayon. So for better or for worse, here t'is. A4 size.
