Amalfi Vista by Richard Harpum

This is a beautiful view drawing the eye through the arch. Expertly painted.

I want to go there !! you have made it look beautiful.

I have commented before that I find your work too detailed, Richard, but there's no denying it is very beautiful, and so well painted.

Thank you all for your kind comments. In response to Lynda, although I am very detail-oriented (it's the engineer in me, so it's a hard urge to resist), I deliberately avoid copying photos. I'm not interested in photorealism, where viewers have to look twice to determine whether or not it's a painting or a photograph. In this painting, I used several of my reference photos of Amalfi for the main scene (there's too much to fit in one photo) and then created the arch, balcony and bougainvilleas completely from my imagination (I did sketch the arch and the balcony first, to get the perspective right). It took a lot of playing around with ideas/sketches before I was able to finalise what I wanted to achieve. Hopefully, I have pulled it off.

I think you have definitely pulled it off, its stunning, absolutely love this.

24" x 24". I took my wife to Naples for her birthday and whilst there, we toured all the local sights, including the Amalfi coast. As is often the case, the light was wonderful and I took numerous photographs, stopping whenever possible on the treacherous coast road or taking side streets to obtain better views. This view is a composite from a number of photographs, using a general view which I have then framed in a typical Italian archway and lined with bougainvilleas.
