I have never heard of this place Val but on looking it up must say you have done a brilliant job of portraying this unusual landscape. I am sure your client was delighted.

Congratulations for even taking the job on - I would be very reluctant to paint a place I neither knew nor had any knowledge of.... I have painted a few Irish scenes from photographs sent to me by a professional photographer friend living in Tralee (Barry Fitzgerald: not the late actor..), because he knows what sort of scene presses my particular buttons and has a feel for what I should be able to paint. But this is so far out of my experience - and yours of course - that only the threat of serious money would have caused me to tackle it.

How brave Val, you pulled that one off well, no surprise though you can tackle anything!

Lovely capturing of these difficult scene Val, especially never having seen it, great work

You have done a lovely job, no wonder they were happy with the painting.

Well done. It's so hard to paint where you haven't been yourself and especially somewhere like this which is so different to what we know. Great painting.

I think you have captured the majesty of this amazing landscape superbly. No wonder his wife was pleased with it!

Lovely sense of theatre in this scene, and grand depth and scale. I know just what you mean about not having a feel for a place, I think I've only ever done 2 paintings from photos that weren't mine and in both cases I had been to the places. Very well done!

It a lovely landscape , beautifully painted Val! Must have been really difficult to set your mind to do something so unfamiliar. You have done ever so well. Congratulations!

Thank you everyone for your generous comments, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when this one went to its new home LOL

Looks almost like a moonscape Val, or what the moon might have looked like once, well done for taking on such a tough commission and pulling it off!!

I bet you did, but its just beautiful, why are the things you do for commissions twice as hard as when you do them just for pleasure, I am in the middle of one now and Ive fiddled and fiddled with it, will have to finish it today or I will go crackers.

This is gorgeous, Val - such beautiful hues and tones, and great use of positive and negative shapes. Fab!

A very difficult task Val, but you have an amazing result.....brilliant!

Thank you Debs, Karyl, Seok and Fiona for taking the time to leave such positive comments, much appreciated.

This is a commission I did earlier this year that caused me lots of angst. Having never been there I didn't have a feel for the place so it was a bit of a struggle. The customer provided several of his own photographs and I did a composite impression of the place from these. Thankfully he was really pleased with it and so was his wife who got it for her birthday :)

Val Kenyon

I am a self taught artist or, as I like to say, I'm "unrestricted by formal teaching" which probably explains my mish mash of styles. I paint in most media, watercolour, gouache, oil, coloured pencil and my favourite, soft pastels. I'm inspired by the Scottish landscape, nature and animals and…
