CARLOS WEIL
Portrait of Carlos Weil, Panama. Painted in oils on stretched canvas 24 x 20" Sketches were made from a live sitting and photos taken at the time. Back at my studio in the UK, I referenced several other photos given to me by Mr. Weil but finally stuck to the impression I had of him from my own studies. Once I got the basics and proportions right I painted the canvas green, but later decided that this was not right and re-painted the background much lighter. I always start with a one colour base denoting shapes, shadows and basic proportions. The second stage is adding colour which is often quite crudely applied and the third stage refines and blends more colours. Adjustments being made throughout the whole process.
