Having just had some disasterous results at my further attempts at a sunset I can empathise with you about paper. Perhaps it does go off? In which case the piles of paper from someone's storage I have been given might not be as useful as I thought. For my further attempts I used smaller paper which was different from my usual stuff. I think it made a big difference, notwithsanding the fact I wasn't sure of how to do it in the first place! Any tips on sunsets apart from avoiding them?

Hi Gudrun, the paper in question that I was using, was A2 size, in a pad format. I found that the exterior edges where the areas affected and varied up 75mm in from the edge. Hence with these two pictures being done from one sheet, not all edges where affected. I'll try it again, but this time cut a section from the middle and see how it works. Try a sunset, see what happens. The main problem I have with sunsets is that I don't mix my wash dence enough and end up having to do to many glazes.

Can't see why you are not pleased with them Peter - both very acomplished works with detail which I could never aspire to

I think I do the same; not enough pigment. I'll give it another go!

They are both good paintings, I would be pleased to have been able to paint them - but I don't like them as much as I like your others, seem to have a little less light and life. I struggle with paper too, have a stock of old papers, most older than yours. One batch given to me by somebody whose Mother had bought it about 30 years ago ! Some give much better results than others, but because I didn't label any of them I have no idea which would be good to buy.

Hi Peter, I think this scene would be very difficult to paint by watercolour. I agree with Michael, yes it is really accomplished piece.

Painted this and the St Neots town bridge late last year, not overly pleased with them, didn't seam to get any feeling out of them or is it just me, at that time I was just trying to get back into my painting. Also I had a lot of trouble with the paper I was using, found it very difficult to work with. Very difficult to do a wash, as soon as the the pigment touched the paper it soaked straight in. Must admit the paper was about 6 - 7 years old. Has any body else had this problem. I have stopped using it now. Langton - not - 140 lb - 45 x 30 cm
