I swear I didn't see your other "Old John" picture - but I recognised this just from the top of the tower. Doubted myself, but I was right. More importantly, I do love the colours, the style and the draughtsmanship. How very bold of you to leave out the distinctive arch in this image! ~~~ (I'm a Lecestershire ex-pat - I live in Hampshire now - but Bradgate was part of my childhood. I took my kids there recently and *they loved it* - which I thought was brilliant).

PS It's volcanic, that rock :-)

Amanda, it's still a special place - we went up there at the dead of night to try to see the aurora the other week. It was very clear and extremely cold - Leicester looked amazing but no sight of the Northern Lights. And yes, it is volcanic rock - the 'precambrian' refers to the geological age when the rock was formed.

I also recognised this being a Leicestershire resident - have visited it many times and this captures it well.

How marvellous, Paul - Bradgate after dark. It isn't the thought of the temperature that sends a shiver though me at the thought. It was only last year that I took the children there - in February They asked to return; we did, in the summer. And perhaps again, this year :-) Sadly, I doubt I'll manage plein air at Bradgate for a while.

Agreed, a great work Paul

In 2012 I completed a series of watercolour paintings taken from photo's I took at Bradgate Park, Leicestershire, of the folly on the top of the hill known as 'Old John' and of the nearby war memorial. I wanted to use colour to emphasise the drama and rugged nature (about the only such spot in Leicestershire) of the park with its ancient rock outcrops, stunning views and wind swept moorland. And to attempt an approach of another favourite artist - Nigel Priddey RBSA.
