Another lovely bird painting Paul. I was a bit surprised at the colour of the breast though - I have female bull finches in my garden and their breasts are a beige colour - very different to the vivid coloured male. My bird books show the female with a beige breast although one of the books has a drawing of a female bullfinch with a pinkish breast, but I must confess I haven't personally seen one. I wonder if the colour changes during the mating season?

Colours are amazing Paul and beautiful brush strokes as always in your bird art, as is the branch with the lichen on it amazingly rendered as well

Hi Julie, yes it surprised me a little bit as well! We do get two pairs of Bullfinches in our garden most of the year. I painted this from one of my own photos so yes it was a bit odd for me as well. Since then I have found that the breast colours can alter considerably depending as you said on the breeding season. I've uploaded the photo I tyook to my web site.... see: http://www.devonartist.co.uk/artwork/BullfinchFemaleMd.jpg

Another beauty Paul, you should get all these bird paintings published in a book.

Incredible detail, lovely painting

Thank you Ros, Val, Glennis and Gudrun!

Beautiful painting as usual. It has all been said.

Bullfinch (female) 225mm x 176mm on SAA 300grm NOT paper. A mixture of watercolour and white acrylic. Painted 2nd February 2013. The colours on the female Bullfinch are amazing! They certainly don't seem that real when you paint them, but the are! :-) I've also posted this on my FaceBook page as a WIP - https://www.facebook.com/thedevonartistpaul also http://www.devonartist.co.uk/
