Very good study Denise

It’s a painting I know quite well Denise , you have done a superb take on it .

You have made a good job of this Denise. Looking at the work of Corot was what tempted me to start painting back in 1961.

This is really Nice! The only classic painting I have in my living room is a large Corot print.

This is really good Denise.

Thanks very much for your comments Heather, Sarah, Paul, George, Skylar and Stephen.

Definitely a Corot…useful exercise!

I certainly recognised this Denise as Corot. I hope the course encourages you to get out in the landscape.

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot - and he's my favourite artist! He tended to avoid sunlight, or at least direct sunlight, and his colours could be quite desaturated; I've forgotten a lot of what I read about his life, but will refresh my memory now you've brought him to the forefont of my mind. I admire the very thin paint in this one - I do love thick, juicy paint, but if you can paint this thinly and make it work, you've achieved something. The foreground tree is good because you've got the shape and sense of it without introducing the mass of twigs which others might have felt it necessary to include: simplicity tells the story just as well, if not better.

This is so good Denise.

A beautiful study. It sings. You got his soft, lyrical effect. I did a painting Fog Over the 'cape using Corot's limited palette of raw umber, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre and alizarine crimson. My painting came out well. I posted it online.

On the first week of the Landscape course we did a quick tonal study of Corot's work. I've got to be honest, I didn't know a lot about him but have since read about him. I liked this particular painting Ville d'Avray. I decided to do a quick study of a proportion of it today. It had a bit of everything, foliage, structures, reflections and figures. It took about 5 hours in oil. I feel like I've got to know the artist a bit better.
