Lovely portrait Denise.

Beautiful Denise.

It is a lovely colour Denise and perfect for this type of drawing. Another very good one.

Conté crayon is such a great medium - you do so well to take to it: portraiture, landscape .... it's perfect for all of them, AND you can erase it, manipulate it, adjust it, and then fix it: even then, you can still work over it if you need to; and you can erase it so easily. Someone - a pro artist - told me I shouldn't use it, or carbon pencil, because "it flatters your technique": she was easily influenced, and had aborbed that (bad) advice from her tutor. I thought, though, "good!" - I need all the technique flattering I can get. But it was such nonsense - it you can't draw, chalks won't help you: if you can, they help and will give you tone - they're wonderful, and the greatest artists all used them. They give warmth, especially on toned paper - why on earth wouldn't you take every advantage you can get from that? Is drawing and painting supposed to be a struggle with unsympathetic media? Sorry for running on! But this sort of hair-shirt twaddle still makes me cross!

I really do love the colour of the sanguine conte pencil I purchased recently. Thought I’d do a quick sketch last night to get some practice blending with it. I used a free photo.
