Landscape No 4. by Denise Cat

This is outstanding work Denise , I can’t believe that it’s the same person who only started sketching and painting three or so years ago .

I agree with Paul, really good Denise

Yes, carbon doesn't work over any lubricated surface, and that includes graphite (perhaps we should have warned you!). Pencil does work over carbon, to some degree at least, though. Carbon pencils have a whole wealth of possibilities - used alongside charcoal and pencil, mixed with water, used to 'dirty' watercolour, great with all sorts of ink - though doesn't always take over some inks, and vice versa. Works over dried watercolour and acrylic (not over oil). If I have nothing else to hand, I've always got a carbon pencil (it's rare indeed that I haven't anything else to hand, mind you). I like the precision and economy of line in this drawing, and the strong contrasts your choice of materials offered you.

Great job Denise!

I do like that little building.

It has some good qualities, very accurate drawing being one of them. If you aren’t going to indicate cloud formations I would suggest that you leave the sky alone! But I would have indicated a few for balance and interest. I’ve got charcoal and pencil drawings on my gallery if you want to see how I approach sky… A ‘lone’ isolated tree as you have here is something that I rarely do, much preferring a small group, visually more interesting. Then I would have positioned the trees and old barn so that the long shadows would hit the stone wall and roof, it joins the two components together in a way, and creates interest. But… another damn good effort, and I’m offering critique here and not criticism… If you aren’t sure what I’m on about, or need something visually to help, I can knock up a quick example if that would help!

Your comments are very much appreciated, thanks Spencer, Cheryl, Paul, Heather Robert, Romila, Marjorie and Alan. Alan, I always appreciate your critique and take on board your advice. Anything that will help improve and move my skills forward is always a bonus, thanks.

Love the little barn, Denise beautifully done.

A lovely atmospheric piece, Denise. Very nicely done.

I love this Denise, especially the barn and the area around it. Well done.

I'm speeding up, this only took 4 hours, mind, I didn't put as much detail in this one, as the others. Just done in one sitting today. I used a selection of all my pencils today, charcoal for the sky and tree, graphite for the barn and a selection of charcoal and carbon pencils for the foreground. I used the carbon pencils for the dark outline of the slated on the roof. Carbon pencils don't work over graphite, that was something I just came across. You all probably know that.
