Lovely experiment Michael the Sunflowers in the foreground lead us on beautifully to the whitewashed and terracotta roofed buildings beyond, lovely palette, super washes

An interesting experiment, Michael - the textures and layers are quite compelling.

It works for me. I like the texture and it's so unique with watercolour.

Interesting experiment, textures are really good, never heard of it before but I would certainly like to try it!

This looks great Michael. A lovely combination of media. I have tried gesso first then watercolour on watercolour paper, interesting.

Interesting technique Michael, good result! I expect you're thinking about another which I'm looking forward to seeing!

I had to check twice that it's really you Michael. I'm very impressed and full of admiration. The painting is really lovely and the colours are bursting with life. Well done!

I had to check which Michael it was as well..LOL

Different for you Michael, I like it a lot.

I love the combination of the very loose watercolour under the very textured flower heads Michael. A very successful experiment.

Thanks all - it was a bit of fun and will certainly have another go at it but overall i think I prefer the cleanness of pure watercolour rather than trying to emulate oils and acrylics.

Your experiment worked, just love the colours, great painting.

Well, I think it is quite exciting and certainly eye-catching.

Works very well Michael, like the textures.

Very striking image. I love the strong colours and beautiful textures. Looking foreward to more!

Certainly gained a bigger and more positive response than I anticipated - thanks so much to you all.

Michael, I don't contribute to the forum, neither would I want to, but I had to comment on your words about primary colours, which I've just been reading. I so agree with you! How on earth does anyone manage to paint anything if they're so busy worrying about colour wheels, theory and 'rules'. I'm not even sure exactly what a primary colour is (I don't need to know so there's no need to enlighten me..LOL). Nor could I tell you exactly what colours I used for a painting. I'd have a vague idea, but colour choice is instinctive I feel and comes from practice! I just think, 'that's a nice colour' and off I go!

It's just that I really can't see any point in spending time painting a nice neat colour wheel. It's no wonder people get nervous about putting paint to paper!

When i first started out I was told that if you mix more than three colours you get mud - it took just a few seconds to tell me that. Ok I now know from experience that it's not always the case but its a good general rule for beginners - I didn't need years of study and a PhD to learn this.

Yes - it is a watercolour but I've used modelling paste. Forgive the poor composition (don't like the full frontal of the predominate flower, flowers could do with a bit of overlap, possibly more of them, etc) but it was a first time using paste and very much an experiment - introduced to the concept by Claire Warner. . Has anyone else used this with watercolour? Will certainly try it again.
