I like this Martin.......love the limited palette and the areas of wax resist, very atmospheric painting.

I agree with Fiona - wax resist effectively applied. Rare to find a castle or big house in the hands of the same family as that which built it: I am extremely anti-feudalist but yet .... I'd far rather the old families still had these great buildings than that they were in the hands of investment bankers, trusts, or, for that matter, English Heritage. You must come to the Isle of Wight and see what a bloody awful mess the latter are making of Carisbrooke Castle - no taste, no sense, no genuine feel for history: if ever a quango deserved the Osborne touch, this one does: but no, they'd rather close down inoffensive local arts groups than save historic buildings from taste-dead bureaucrats... Getting cross here, and we are SLIGHTLY off-subject.....

Thank you very much Fiona and Robert - such kind comments. I think you need to have a lie-down Robert - think of your blood pressure, sir...

This imposing castle was built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard le Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton. What is quite staggering is the fact that the castle has never been sold and is still in the ownership of the descendants of the Scrope family. The massive outer walls of this very well-preserved site dominate the hamlet of Castle Bolton that lies at its feet. In its dominating position overlooking the valley, the castle is now a well-established major tourist attraction in the area. Painted on location. Pen, brush and ink with wax resist. 22" x 15"
