Hm. I dunno.... to be honest; there's a lot to like about it, the delicate blue washes, the sweep of the landscape, the bold use of oil pastel (or wax resist, comes to much the same thing)... I suppose my small hint of reservation is that I've seen the house, and it's so huge and dominating in my memory, yet here it seems to be an incidental detail of the landscape....but then, in reality, that's just what it is.......... I'm transfixed by the image in my head, that's the trouble; but I love the way the darks merge into the water and riverbank, and the energy in the sky.....I think, on the whole, that I'd have liked the house, which is a major architectural achievement in its own right, to be just slightly more sharply drawn so that it was the undoubted focus of the painting in relation to an abstract setting. Mind you, that is an "I think" - and I have had dinner and drinkypoos.....

Thanks Robert - I know what you mean. It would have been obvious to fill the paper with a two-dimensional homage to this architectural colossus. I suppose I wanted to do something a little different... Cheers! (Hic)

This has a very abstract feel to it..again I really like the simplification.

Probably the most well-known of great English country houses, Chatsworth is the home of the Duke of Devonshire, the Cavendish family. This is a bit of an experiment in the sense that it wasn't painted 'plein-air' (on location) but was painted from photos and memories of previous visits, the last being about a month ago. Was it successful? Mixed media. 14.5" x 10.5"
