Believed to have been built by Richard Norton of Rylstone Hall around 1540, Norton Tower was probably a gamekeepers lodge. Legend, however, suggests that it was a guard post for watchers after a dispute over hunting rights in the area between the Nortons of Rylstone and the Cliffords of Skipton Castle just a few miles down the valley. Norton Tower also features in William Wordsworth's poem 'The White Doe of Rylstone'. Pen, ink and wax resist on paper 15" x 22"
