How did this get no comments, for Gawd's sake? Must have been shunted at speed off the front page. A striking and effective painting: it captures the isolation and dominance of the abbey, and is a comment both on the brilliance of its construction and on the destructive and arrogant stupidity of that petty tyrant Henry VIII. I look at this and hear the claim that this is a Christian country with utter scepticism - the powers that be believe in nothing except that which reinforces their power. And the great monasteries stood in the way... I swear the world was better off when the dinosaurs ruled it, but perhaps I've just had a bad day......

I think you must have had a bad day Robert! Thank you though for your kind comments - I really appreciate them. There is so much good work on here that pieces don't stay long in the limelight. And, as I readily hold up my hand to admit, many people just don't spend the time to look through or comment upon the great work on this site.

Once one of the greatest monastries of England, the ruins of Byland Abbey provide a delightfully peaceful location for contemplation. In its heyday, the abbey inspired the design of church buildings throughout the north and is a truly outstanding example of early gothic architecture, dating from 1135. Now in the care of English Heritage. Painted on the spot. Mixed media on 230gsm paper. 15" x 11"
