We suffer from westerlies here too - relentlessly. We always hope for the wind to be in other direction, which would bring us different weather to the rain. I understand that the South Island gets 3 times more rain on the West coast than the East.

Hi, certainly is wetter there - the Southern Alps rise close to the shore and so the westerlies coming in over the Tasman sea are forced up and lose their moisture. There is rain forest almost to shore edge in places and the trees are shaped by those winds.. Mike Capenerhurst
