I agree Louise, it is good to use your imagination, but equally good to hone your observational skills, which you have done to great effect here. The flowers are lovely.

That's weird, I've been sat here for the past hour and a bit trying to decide what to paint (or procrastinating as they call it on the forum LOL) and I'd just decided to paint some lovely deep red montbretia we have in the garden when up popped this little beauty. You might have gone back to basics and painted what was in front of you but there is no mistaking your individual style and I love the colours you've used in the leaves.

Thanks Julie and Val! Val, I couldn't remember their name! Montbretia, that's it, now it's come to me, there's also a variety called 'Lucifer' which I always thought was a good name for such a red, firey looking flower. This is beginning to sound like gardener's question time (lol)

i am all for imagination :-p but you have created some lovely flowers here Louise. :-)

Well - you've really surprised me as I wouldn't have thought that this was one of yours - not your usual subject at all. However, with your great skill and talent you can turn your hand to anything it seems and this a such a lovely fresh, well observed and colourful painting. Your choice of greens for the leaves are a perfect contrast to the vibrant flowers. A really lovely piece of work.

Beautiful Louise.....lovely contrast of red and greens.

What's that they say? A change is as good as a rest (lol) I enjoyed painting these flowers even though I had to look hard at the subject, concentrate on getting it right first time and not trust to luck as sometimes happens with my more abstract watercolours. Thank you all for your comments which are appreciated.

Superb - can't say more!

Lovely painting Louise

Super piece Louise, you've captured them perfectly and your use of colour is always remarkable.

Thanks Michael, Glennis and Lesley.

Whatever you do your great sense of style (as in patternwork/design) shows through. Great composition and nicely done :)

Great colours Louise, a lovely dynamic composition.

A stunning piece, Louise!

Many thanks Sarah, Carole and Seok !

You can never get bored with flowers ,and here you have created a strong painting of them. There is a skilful economy here.I would be interested to hear what colours you used?

Thanks David! In answer to your question, I'm honestly not too sure. I'm quite careless with my colours and just tend to dip in to whatever's handy. Obviously cadmium red, orange, viridian, phthalo blue and probably a touch of raw umber. Sorry, I can't be more precise and knowing me, I daresay a few other shades have crept in!

watercolour 30 cm x 22 cm. Sometimes I feel that it's a good idea to get back to basics and look very closely at what I'm painting. Although these flowers didn't take long to paint, I had to concentrate and paint what was in front of me instead of my usual imaginary flowers. It's a good thing to practice drawing skills I think :)
