Another urban sketch produced in Ieper, Belgium. This is looking towards the Menin Gate from the direction of the Cloth Hall. The Menin Gate is a memorial to thousands and thousands of men whose lives were lost in the battles around Ieper (Ypres) up to August 1917, whose bodies have not yet been identified. My own great grandfather's name was originally upon the monument, but his body was subsequently discovered and buried a few miles away at Voormezeele. As for the Menin Gate, every evening at 8pm members of the Ieper Fire brigade play the Last Post in a simple and very moving ceremony, which attracts hundreds of people every evening.
